Dept. of Architecture|College of Engg. TVM
45 YEARS OF ARCHITECTURAL EDUCATION IN KERALA

Kerala is very famous for its architecture, both theory and practice from historical times. Many historians believe that quite a few old treaties on Vastushastra written in Sanskrit originated here. Initially Architectural education was carried out informally, mostly handled down through families and castes. Formal education in modem architecture started in Kerala about forty-five years ago with the establishment of the Department of Architecture in the College of Engineering Trivandrum.

The Department of Architecture started in 1964 with Late Prof. J.C. Alexander, the then Chief Town planner and Consulting Architect to the Government of Kerala as the Head of the Department. His colleagues in the Department of Architecture and Town Planning of Government of Kerala served as part time teachers.

The department shifted to its present independent building in the year 1994. Presently the department is running a five-year B.Arch degree course comprising of ten semesters as per the norms of the Council of Architecture, New Delhi and a Post Graduate course of M.Planning (Housing) comprising of four semesters.

The graduates from this institution lead the architectural scene in Kerala and all over the world at present. Quite a few of them have distinguished themselves in the profession, by winning awards, competitions and popular acclaim.
